Epiphany Blessing

Here is the text we used for this morning’s blessing of the doorway, which you can also use at home.

Our help is in the name of the Lord.        Who made heaven and earth.

The Lord be with you.                And with your spirit.

Let us pray.

Lord God, bless this chalk ✠

which you have fashioned out of the goodness of creation.

Grant that those who will use it

to inscribe the names of the Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar,

as a prayer for Christ’s blessing upon their homes

may receive health of body, protection of soul

and, at the end, the vision of their names written in the Book of Life.

Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The chalk is now sprinkled with Holy Water and distributed to all so that they may repeat the actions below above the threshold of their own homes.

Verse:        Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia! (repeat)

        From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord;

        and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts:

        gold for the great King, incense for the true God,

        and myrrh in symbol of His burial. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia!

Scripture:    Psalm 121 (during which the inscription is made over the threshold.)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where shall come my help?    (inscribe 2)

My help shall come from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.        (inscribe 0)

He will keep your feet from stumbling.                    (inscribe +)

Your guard will never slumber.                        (inscribe C)

No, he sleeps not nor slumbers, Israel’s guard.                (inscribe +)

The Lord is your guard, the Lord is your shade at your right hand.        (inscribe M)

By day the sun shall not smite you,                        (inscribe +)

nor the moon in the night.                            (inscribe B)

The Lord will guard you from evil;                        (inscribe +)

he will guard your soul.                            (inscribe 1)

The Lord will guard your going and coming, both now and forever.        (inscribe 9)

O God, make the threshold of this house and of our hearts

wide enough to receive all who need human love and companionship;

narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and strife;

smooth enough to be no stumbling block to children, nor to straying feet,

but rugged and strong enough to turn back the tempter’s power.

Through Christ our Lord.                             Amen.

May the Lord guard our going and coming                    Both now and forever.

Let us bless the Lord.                                Thanks be to God.
