We often say that ‘actions speak louder than words.’ Jesus expresses the same idea in a different way when he tells his disciples, ‘Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’ It’s our actions, and the choices that we make, that reveal what is most important to us.
Jesus tells Peter and the twelve apostles to be good stewards. A steward is a senior servant, responsible for taking care of the master’s property. Jesus knew that he would return to God the Father, and he entrusted the apostles with a treasure – the Good News of eternal life. He gave them the responsibility for keeping it safe and passing it on to others. He trusted them to be good stewards – faithful servants.
To be a Christian is to be a person of hope. We live our lives in this world, but we are always looking forward to the life to come. Whatever position or possessions we may enjoy in the world, our hearts are in heaven and we put our trust in the promises of Christ. He is our real treasure.
