Receive the Holy Spirit

Fifty days have passed since our celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection and today the season of Eastertide comes to an end with the Feast of Pentecost. Today we celebrate the beginning of the Church, when the Holy Spirit comes down on Jesus’ disciples.

The First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles tells us that there were people in Jerusalem from all over the world. It was a babble of different languages. But when the Holy Spirit gave the disciples the gift of speech, everyone present could understand their words. Everyone could learn about the marvels of God. The Spirit brought together the nations of the world.

Even after Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples were still fearful and uncertain. But once they received the Holy Spirit, they were filled with joy. In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends them out to share the Good News and to forgive sins. This is the mission of the Church. God’s Church exists to preach the truth about Jesus Christ to the whole world, and to bring joy and forgiveness of sins. This is the mission that Jesus gave to his disciples, and today it is our mission too.
