When John the Baptist was asked ‘Who are you?’ he was not afraid to answer. He was a ‘witness to speak for the Light.’ The Light of the World is Jesus.
John preached in the wilderness, as the prophet Isaiah foretold. He called the people to repent of their sins and to be baptised as a symbol of a new life. He proclaimed that the Christ, God’s anointed one, was coming. John was responding to a call from God and he carried out his mission fearlessly. In the end, he gave his life.
On this Third Sunday of Advent, we can begin to look forward with joy. Salvation is coming. The birth of Christ is Good News for the poor and the broken-hearted.
John the Baptist was a prophet and we too were baptised as prophets. We have all been called by God to proclaim the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World. We are all called to share the Good News that we have received. Like John, if we have faith and respond to God’s call, we will not be afraid to stand up and witness.
