Justice & Peace

Our parish collects biscuits and toilet rolls to help provide basic supplies to asylum seekers in the diocese. These are collected regularly, on the first Sunday of the month. If you would like to donate items and haven’t brought anything in yet then please remember to bring them to church next Sunday 6 August and place them under the bench in the narthex ready to be collected.

Baptism

Theodore Sackfield will be welcomed to our parish community at the 10.00am Mass today, before celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism next Sunday, 6 August, at 11.30am. Please pray for Theodore and his family. Everyone is welcome to the celebration of Baptism next Sunday.

Finchale Partnership event

Thank you to everyone who came along to Ushaw College last Sunday for our first Partnership event.  168 people came from across the Partnership, and, despite the weather, we had a great afternoon, with activities for families, tours of the college and Vespers in St. Cuthbert’s Chapel.  Thank you to Ushaw and their volunteers for their hospitality.

There are some photos of the event here

Events at Minsteracres

3-day Walking Retreat: Three days with walks of 8-10 miles through the beautiful countryside around Minsteracres, with time for prayer, reflection and sharing of the beauty of creation. You will need suitable walking boots and warm, weatherproof clothing. A packed lunch will be provided each day. The walk will be led by the Minsteracres team. Tuesday 25-Thursday 27 July. Cost £120.

Apostleship of the Sea

Sister Scholastica, the AoS chaplain at the Port of Sunderland, takes woolly hats on board ships entering the port as a welcome gift for the seamen, many of whom come from south-east Asia and are totally unprepared for the cold North Sea. As a practical way of showing support for the people who bring us goods from abroad it is a very easy thing for anyone who can knit or crochet to do. If you have the skills, please take a photocopied pattern from the pile at the back of church. Completed hats can be handed in at church, and will be sent on to Sr Scholastica.

Fair Trade

Volunteers are needed to staff the fortnightly Fair Trade stall after morning Mass. It’s not too big a job: you need to arrive a bit early for Mass, set up the stall, collect a cash float, sell the Fair Trade products and put the stock away afterwards. If you’re interested in joining the rota, please speak to Fr Andrew or to Pauline Butler.

FINCHALE PARTNERSHIP EVENT AT USHAW

Please join us for our first partnership event at Ushaw today Sunday 23rd July. It is a chance for us to get to know each other and to pray together.

The afternoon starts at 2.00pm, and you are invited to bring a picnic, to join in games and activities for families, and to enjoy the grounds and the buildings at Ushaw. There will be light snacks and drinks available, and the chance to see several exhibitions in the college, including ‘Secret Faith’, a new exhibition of artefacts made by Catholics during the 16th-19th centuries, when Catholicism was illegal. If you would like to join one of the tours (the General Tour, Hidden Ushaw or the Stained Glass), the cost is £5.00. The afternoon will conclude with Vespers in St. Cuthbert’s Chapel at 5.00pm.

When you arrive at Ushaw, a good place to start is the main entrance hall, where there will be information about what is happening where, where to meet for tours and the arrangements for Vespers.

You can find up to date information on the development of Partnerships in our Diocese in the ‘Partnerships Area’ of the diocesan website, www.rcdhn.org.uk Check it out!
