Baptism

James Richardson will be welcomed to our parish community at the 10.00am Mass today, before celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism next Sunday, 23 July, at 11.30am. Please pray for James and his family. Everyone is welcome to the celebration of Baptism next Sunday.

Around the Church

This cross is carved into the stonework of the doorway as you come into church.  There is a cross each side of the door and they are consecration crosses.

There are traditionally 12 consecration crosses, blessed when a church is consecrated.

As well as the 2 on the doorway there are painted crosses around the interior of the church, which was consecrated in 1910.

Durham Miners’ Gala

Thank you to everyone who came along to help serve refreshments at the Miners’ Gala last Saturday, and to those who donated food for us to sell.

We made £673.60 profit for the charities which the parish supports.

We also received £84.50 in donations from those who used the toilets, and this money will go to support the Toilet Twinning project.

Come to Me

Life is not easy. We all have our “yoke” to carry: the daily challenge of earning a living or caring for a family; the struggles of illness or disability. We all, sometimes, feel weary and “overburdened,” as Jesus says in today’s Gospel.

God doesn’t watch our struggles from a distance. Jesus, the Son of God, was truly human, and he shared in all that we experience. He felt hungry, tired and discouraged. He wept at the loss of friends. The life of Jesus reveals God’s compassion for us. God is closest to us at the saddest and most difficult times in our lives, and God has a special love for the poor and powerless.

Jesus calls us to live our lives by his law of love: love of God and love of neighbour. His “yoke” is easy to carry, because he calls us to be free, truly alive and truly ourselves. His invitation is offered to everyone: Come to me.

Events at Minsteracres

Being messengers of compassion and hope: This preached retreat will offer reflections about the ways in which Jesus reveals to us the God who shows compassion and unconditional love for every human being. It will also explore ways in which we as followers of Jesus continue his mission and move forward in hope in times when hope is often lacking. The retreat will be conducted in an atmosphere of silence. The retreat will be led by Fr. John Fuellenbach, a member of the Society of the Divine Word, who has written a number of books on scripture and theology and has many years’ experience in teaching and conducting workshops and retreats in different parts of the world. Monday 17-Monday 24 July.

Moira Rogers

Moira Rogers who was a member of St Cuthbert’s Parish for over forty years sadly died last week. She attended Mass everyday at St Cuthbert’s until two years ago when she could no longer walk the distance from Nevilles Cross to St Cuthbert’s and started to attend St Godrics. Holy Mass was always her first priority.

Her Requiem Mass is at St Godrics Church on Thursday 13 July at 11:30am.

Thank you

Alison Purvis would like to thank all those who sponsored her in the recent Colourama Run, in memory of Susan Laing. St Cuthbert’s Church contributed a massive £325 to the £1,752 total raised by the Watermelon Dance and Zumba Team. Many, many thanks!

CAKE SALE

Our parishioner, Catherine Laing, will be taking part in mother and baby project in Iloilo in the Philippines for 3 weeks in April 2018. 2 weeks will be spent working in the hospital in the maternity unit, and the final week Catherine will be living with the Ati tribe and working in local health clinics. This is an opportunity to be able to see what the maternity services are like in a less developed country and be able to share skills and practices from the UK with health professionals in the Philippines to better their practice. Please support the project by buying the delicious cakes on sale after Mass today!

SEA SUNDAY

Today Sunday 9 July  is Sea Sunday, when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. Without them we would not have most of the items we buy in the shops. Today’s retiring collection is for Apostleship of the Sea (AoS), the Church’s official maritime welfare agency. It supports seafarers both practically and spiritually. This collection is vital to enable AoS to continue its work, so please give generously and remember seafarers in your prayers. To donate online, or to find out more about the work of the Apostleship of the Sea, visit www.apostleshipofthesea.org.uk
